Chapter 13
The soldier's eyes bored into the manifest before him, the dim lamplight casting a yellowish hue on the paper. His fingers traced over the list of names as if he could summon Artemis from the ink itself. His heart quickened when he found her nameâArtemis Blythe, seat 23A. He committed it to memory.
The faintest hint of a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"Reginald," the soldier barked into the phone, knowing that his butler would answer promptly. "I need you to make some arrangements."
"Of course, sir," Reginald replied in his usual calm tone, betraying not a single hint of the urgency that bubbled beneath the surface. "What do you require?"
"Book two tickets on flight TK1829. We're taking an unexpected trip to Istanbul."
"Very well, sir," Reginald said. "May I inquire as to the nature of this trip?"
"Artemis and Cameron are within reach," the soldier responded, his voice cold and resolute. "I won't let them slip away again."
"Understood, sir. I will ensure everything is prepared for your departure." Reginald's unwavering loyalty comforted the soldier in a way few other things could.
As the soldier hung up the phone, his thoughts turned once more to Artemis. Despite her plain appearance, with her coal-black hair and simple clothes devoid of makeup or piercings, he knew all too well the cunning that lay beneath her pretty features. She was a chess master, always plotting her next move, manipulating others like pieces on a board.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the airfield. The soldier and the butler strode purposefully across the tarmac, their eyes fixed on the sleek private plane that awaited them. Its engines hummed softly in the background, like a predatory animal lying in wait.
"Sir," Reginald began, his voice a quiet murmur in the soldier's ear, "I've taken care of all the necessary preparations. We should have no trouble reaching Istanbul."
"Good." The soldier's voice was terse, his mind already working through the myriad possibilities that lay ahead. "We can't afford any delays. Not this time."
As they neared the gleaming aircraft, the soldier couldn't help but admire its streamlined beauty. It was a fitting instrument for a man who had dedicated his life to the pursuit of excellence.
Once inside, the soldier paused to survey his surroundings. The interior of the plane was just as luxurious as the exterior promised, with plush leather seats and polished wood paneling. But the soldier paid little heed to these trappings of wealth; his mind was consumed by thoughts of revenge.
"Is everything to your satisfaction, sir?" Reginald asked, his voice betraying only the faintest hint of concern.
"Quite so, Reginald," the soldier replied, forcing a tight smile. "Now, let's get this show on the road, shall we?"
"Of course, sir." With a nod, Reginald turned to relay the soldier's command to the pilot.
As the plane began to taxi down the runway, the soldier allowed himself a brief moment of reflection.
The smell of polished leather and gasoline mingled in the air as the soldier settled into his seat, feeling the firm cushioning envelop him.
